The curtain airbags cover all the side windows in a side-impact crash to offer head protection and to keep heads and arms inside the vehicle in a rollover. The honda odyssey got a 'marginal' rating for rear impact while the toyota sienna and nissan quest got 'poor' ratings. Even the inside door handles for the second row seem the same. That is a helpful feature that allows some flexibility with legroom and cargo capacity. flexibility is a good thing for anybody planning to sit in the third row. Like most third rows it is designed for small to mid-size children. but it is worth noting that hyundai measures what appears to be a generous 34 inches of third-row legroom with the second-row captain's chairs in their forward-most position. That's about twice the size of the trunk of a mid-size sedan but such calculations typically involve stacking stuff to the roof. With the third row folded flat, the cargo capacity increases to 80 cubic feet, according to hyundai. driving impressionwhile some people disdain minivans as being less appealing than a big truck-based suv this involves a moderate amount of delusion. It handles rough surfaces well, which is a good plan for a vehicle intended as a people carrier not a sports sedan. but a particularly deep pothole sends a quiver through the body that suggests the structure isn't as solid as it could be. Driving the honda odyssey on the same roads shows it has a better structure. That contributes to the locked-down and reassuring feeling on the interstate. Many other critics have praised sonata's look, however, and if it's confused with any other sedan, it's more likely to be mistaken for a lexus or some other luxury model than for another mainstream mid-size. inside, features, materials and fit and finish are among the best in the class, especially in build quality and tolerances. the 2013 sonata lineup starts with the sonata gls, which retails for about $21,000 and comes with a full complement of power features, cruise control, bluetooth connectivity and more power than other cars in its class. Hybrid features and options essentially mirror those of the se model. beyond the packages, options are limited to dealer-installed features such as remote start 350), rear spoiler 250) and rearview mirror with homelink garage-door control 250). safety features standard on all models include front-impact airbags, driver and front passenger side impact airbags, front and rear seat head-protection curtains, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, electronic stability control, active front-seat head restraints and a tire-pressure monitor. Hyundai's blue link crash-reporting telematics system comes standard, too, with a temporary subscription to basic services. The similarity says something about the styling department's intentions with hyundai's most popular sedan. the sonata is marketed as a mid-size, but its exterior dimensions push the larger limit compared to the toyota camry, honda accord and ford fusion. Indeed, measured by total enclosed space, the sonata sneaks in at the bottom of the government's large-sedan class. hyundai's designers throw around phrases like 'fluidic sculpture design language' and 'monoform side profile' in describing the sonata's styling. They say their goal was a car that won't be mistaken for any other. It's just that the sonata is not necessarily unique, and it's not as clean or sleek as the kia optima sedan, which shares its basic structure. the front end on most sonata models has a pinched nose look echoing the hyundai genesis coupe. Sculpted creases flow forward and inward from the a-pillars (the windshield's side frames), drawing the eye to the grin like grille and outsized hyundai logo. Headlight housings start at the outer edges of the grille and wrap around the front fenders beyond the leading arch of the wheelwell, visually minimizing the front overhang. The lower fascia sports a wide mouth air intake flanked by squinting recesses for fog lights. The grille is body colored on the base gls, and dark chrome on the se and limited. the hybrid's front end shows much of the same shapes and sculpting, but gets an entirely different and quite striking grille treatment, with an oversized, hexagonal opening split by an oversized horizontal bar. Hyundai wants everyone to know that this sonata is something special. The hybrid's headlights make a similar statement, highlighted with a string of led running lights laced around the projector beam lenses. the side view of the sonata shows three sharply defined character lines below the roof. The roof itself tracks though a severely raked windshield and rear window and into a short trunk lid, minimizing the car's visual mass. The highlight is a chrome strip that starts at the headlight housing and runs along the car's beltline (where the side windows meet the door panels) all the way to the rearmost tip of the rear quarter glass. Below this is a knife edge crease sweeping up from the front quarter panel through the door handles, finishing as an eyebrow for the taillight housings. another knife edge crease cuts across the bottom of the doors just above the rocker panels, before leapfrogging the rear wheelwells to melt into the rear bumper. On the hybrid, a chrome strip accents this crease. All three tire sizes fill perfectly circular wheelwells, giving the sonata a balanced front to rear proportion. the rear view might be sonata's cleanest and best. Three-door coupe adds sporty turbo option. introductionthe hyundai veloster is a sporty, three-door compact car with unique looks, fun driving dynamics and good fuel economy. It launched as a 2012 model with a naturally aspirated 1. 6-liter engine that makes 138 horsepower and an admirable epa rating of 40 mpg highway with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The engine uses all the right high-tech stuff to get these numbers, such as gasoline direct injection (gdi), and dual continuously variable valve timing (d-cvvt). for 2013, the veloster turbo joins the lineup. A traditional 6-speed automatic with shiftronic is optional. The naturally aspirated veloster, meanwhile, uses a dual-clutch automatic. the turbo's increased performance predictably takes a toll on gas mileage, but still achieves a respectable 26 mpg city and 38 mpg highway epa rating with the manual and 25/34 mpg with the automatic. the veloster turbo distinguishes itself from the naturally aspirated model with a huge front grille, a body kit, different front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler and upgraded standard features such as leather upholstery, heated front seats and pushbutton start. All turbos ride on larger, 18-inch wheels. perhaps most interestingly, the veloster turbo is available in a matte gray paint color, which costs an extra $1,000 and, like other cars with flat paint colors, must be taken care of meticulously by hand. The paint is so fussy that customers must sign a release form that states they won't take it through an automated carwash. Those who pop for the high-maintenance paint will receive a car-care kit with cleaning products they can use at home. the veloster's styling gets a lot of looks on the highway, although we think it looks a tad overdone. As a three-door coupe, it totally pulls off the two-door roofline. The third door is on the passenger side, hinged at the front like a real door. With other three-door compacts, the third door can be awkwardly hinged; not so with the veloster. Standard features include the comfort and convenience features found in the standard veloster plus leather upholstery, driver's power lumbar support, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, alloy pedals, 8-speaker audio system with external amp and subwoofer, pushbutton start, unique interior trim, a unique front grille, front fog lights, led accents on headlights, led rear taillights, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a sport tuned suspension ground effects bodykit and 18-inch alloy wheels. The veloster turbo ultimate package 2,500) adds navigation, 115-volt power outlet, rearview camera, power sunroof, backup sensors and automatic headlights. Special color body color options include elite white 200) and a special matte gray 1,000), which includes an in-home car-care kit. safety equipment on all models includes six airbags (frontal, front side impact, curtains), stability control with traction control, abs, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundvisually, the veloster sets itself apart from other hyundai models with a bolder, busier design. Unlike the cleaner lines of hyundai's sedans, the veloster's muscular shape is riddled with lumps, scoops and scallops. but take a couple of steps back, and the veloster doesn't look so bad. The nose is low, and from a three-quarter rear view, it looks tough on its haunches. The standard veloster's mouth is as wide as an audi's, but it's filled in with body-colored plastic, shaped to resemble wings, but maybe looks more like superman's shoulders while flying, with a chrome cape and silver h for a face. the veloster turbo gets an even bigger, all-black mouth that looks to be all air intake, different fog lights, led accents around the headlights and side mirrors with integrated turn signals. In back, the turbo sports a rear spoiler, led tail lights and large dual exhaust tips. All turbos ride on 18-inch wheels. Inside, pushbutton start, leather upholstery and heated seats come standard, as well as an upgraded audio system. a new matte gray color for the veloster turbo is a gamble for hyundai. The special clear coat that gives the matte appearance must be taken care of meticulously. Customers must also sign a release form that acknowledges that the paint must be taken care of in a particular way. Hyundai execs admit they can't vouch for long-term longevity and say second owners could prove to be a challenge. This isn't unique to hyundai, however, as other cars, including expensive luxury cars, with flat paint colors face the same challenges. They look really neat when in good condition, though. as a three-door coupe, the veloster totally pulls off the two-door roofline. On the passenger side, the third door is hidden save the seam. Rakish upsweep meets a racy roofline, invisible door handle in the window corner. Thankfully, the window trim is black. the single center exhaust on the standard veloster is like siamese twin trapezoids, outlined by chrome, while the veloster turbo gets dual, side-by-side exhaust tips in the same spot. Both versions are boxed in by a big black plastic fascia that makes the rear end look almost frog-like. They say the a-pillars are like a helmet visor, the center stack resembles a fuel tank, the console mirrors a motorcycle seat, and air vents are inspired by tailpipes. Mostly we noticed overkill on the trapezoidal trim pieces. on the standard veloster, we noticed terrific fit and materials of the style package seats, nice console support at the right thigh, good feel of the three-spoke leather steering wheel, pleasing uncluttered gauges, and digital information accessed easily. Features include bluetooth, pandora internet radio via iphone, and gracenote music connectivity. A 196-watt six-speaker audio system is standard, while the 450-watt eight-speaker system comes with the style package. the veloster turbo adds extra touches including aluminum pedals, pushbutton start and heated front seats. Leather upholstery is standard, but it felt more plastic than plush, and we noticed that stitching around the driver's seat had already begun to buckle in some places. rear visibility has a couple of problems. There's a big blind spot at the c-pillar over the driver's shoulder, which is typical for cars with this type of roofline. And the structural support in the fastback glass liftgate blocks rearview visibility, but overall it's still better than some hatches on the market such as the toyota prius and honda cr-z. the backseat is easy to get into, thanks to the veloster's front-hinged third door. Hyundai jumps on the bandwagon with other luxury car makers by adding integrated led accent lights (a la audi), as well as a revised wraparound headlamp design. A modified front bumper sports a new air intake, while the redesigned front grille incorporates cleaner, straighter lines. on the sides, a darker trim around windows aims to convey a more upscale feel, while more prominent rocker panels give a slightly more assertive look. New side mirrors are reshaped and now include a power-folding feature and integrated puddle lamps. in back, wraparound tail lights are more pronounced and the rear bumper features and integrated rear exhaust design, which lends a seamless, attractive appearance. interiorthe cabin of the 2012 hyundai genesis sedan is elegant and tastefully executed. We took a genesis 3. 8 model for a spin in the nevada desert and found the leather seats to be supportive and supple. Other leather trim, such as the wraparound two-tone dash gives the interior just the right touch of luxe. However, the wood grain trim looks more plastic than posh, especially around the doors. the lcd gauges are bright and sharp, and are pleasing on the eye. Center stack controls are large and easy to read. Curiously, the small compartment between the shift lever and the center stack is dedicated to an ashtray and cigarette lighter, perhaps designed for the asian market, since many u. S.-bound vehicles have long abandoned these (or make them available in a separate smoker's package). Front head- and legroom were more than adequate for drivers and passengers ranging from petite to tall, but in back, the head of one six-foot passenger nearly grazed the headliner while sitting behind the driver. And because the center seat is slightly raised, it's not an option for taller riders. Rear legroom is plentiful, as long as the front seats aren't all the way back. unlike many of its competitors, the 2012 hyundai genesis doesn't offer folding split rear seats, only a pass-through slot.
