2000 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The more things change, the more they stay the same. introductionchevrolet suburban has been completely redesigned and re-engineered for model year 2000. Its interior is all new and improved, but feels familiar. Its new engines offer substantially more power. Its rigid new frame and re-engineered suspensions offer excellent handling and ride quality. Last, but certainly not least, the brakes have been totally re-engineered for vastly improved pedal feel and stopping performance. soup to nuts, the suburban is a more refined vehicle than before. Three trim levels are available, base, ls and lt. Suburban 1500s come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500s come with a 6. 0-liter v8. (a diesel engine may be available next year.) retail prices for 1500 models: 2wd 26,421); ls 2wd 33,844); lt 2wd 37,912); 4wd 28,375); ls 4wd 36,760); lt 4wd 40,828). All come with air conditioning. Ls and lt come with power windows, rear air conditioning, a compass and remote keyless entry. Moving up through the trim levels brings nicer interiors: ls gets a nicer cloth reclining front bench seat with adjustable lumbar support; bucket seats are an option. Lt is fitted with leather seating surfaces and premium full-function heated front bucket seats. Lt also comes with electronic climate control, premium cd stereo, the homelink universal garage door opener and gm's onstar system. Otherwise, the primary functional difference is that lt comes with chevy's premium ride suspension. walkaroundthis new suburban looks strikingly different yet familiar at the same time. All the sheet metal is new. The entire vehicle looks smoother and more aerodynamic; sharp edges have been rounded. Most noticeable are the new headlights. two tailgate configurations are available. A new lightweight one-piece rear hatch similar to those found on compact suvs is useful for families and can be opened with one hand. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. The hinges have been re-engineered for a more finished appearance; and they let the doors open wide without having to disconnect the hinges. an innovative puddle lamp mounted below the side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter of the suburban. It's a nice feature that can be turned on using the keyless remote when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. Chevy suburban is nearly identical to the gmc yukon xl, which was called the gmc suburban until this year. interiorseating has been cleverly designed. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. This bench seat can be easily removed as it's mounted on wheels; it weighs 75 pounds, however, so get some help before pulling it out the back end of the suburban. Loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it; lift-over height is lower than that of the ford excursion. Lt's leather seats are better. The second row is quite comfortable. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front turn on the radio. Getting back there requires folding and flipping the seat out of the way. though my mother-in-law found getting into the suburban a bit of a step up, it isn't a problem for those of standard stature. Step-in height is actually lower than before because of the new fully boxed frame. Driving quickly over wet pavement through the san juan mountains high above colorado's delores river, we never lost traction. I took turns driving the suburban on the wet, winding road with the road test editor from one of the major enthusiast magazines. Each of us has extensive racing experience, but we were unable to get the suburban to come unglued. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a suburban and never lost grip. The frame is completely re-engineered. The entire front part of the frame is hydro-formed from one piece of metal and is far more rigid than a bunch of pieces welded together. ride quality in the suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation suburban. The optional premium ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. This system offered a good ride quality on the suburban i drove. The more sophisticated optional auto-ride suspension system uses computer-controlled shock damping for improved ride quality over uneven pavement. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, auto-ride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive on braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly) and body roll (or lean) during cornering. most people find the 1500 models meet their needs. The 2500 models, often referred to as the 3/4-ton versions, are only needed for those who tow heavy trailers. Rated to tow up to 10,500 pounds, they effectively match the towing capacity of the ford excursion. Suburban 2500 is going to ride a bit harsher because its rear suspension uses leaf springs instead of the coil-springs used on the 1500. But the 2500 rides surprisingly well, given its load range, a big improvement over the previous-generation 2500 models and smoother than the big ford excursion. until now, suburbans came with mushy brakes. Gm redesigned the brake system to address this. The pedal on the new suburban works smoothly and progressively, which makes is easier to stop smoothly. Brake pads and rotors are 40-percent larger and use new twin-piston calipers. Those in the sunbelt may not see justification for it. These new vortec v8s offer a 30-percent increase in power over their predecessors. Suburban's automatic transmission comes with a tow/haul mode. Pushing a switch on the end of the column shifter changes the shift points of the transmission. The tow/haul mode improves performance while towing and lessens wear on the transmission. Even whe. summarywe love the suburban. It's a great vehicle for moving cargo, towing trailers, hauling people. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached. all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment. a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels. . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging. supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase. also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year. . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features. the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck. . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle. the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort. all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. It is smooth, stylish, comfortable and civilized. Packages available include the sle, slt, and denali. Each trim add increases the numbers of features and the denali package includes a 5. 3-liter v-8. Because it's longer and heavier, the xl is reported to not handle as well as the envoy nor feel as reassuring as the wider gmc yukon. There are no significant changes for 2005.

It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod. it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior. as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines.
