2010 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. For many years, the ford explorer has been one of the best-selling suvs in the market. Two powertrain combinations are available: a 210-hp 4. 0-liter v6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trims, while a 292-hp 4. 6-liter v8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission is optional on the eddie bauer and limited. Explorer xlt trims are well-equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control and mp3 capability; eddie bauer trims add unique two-tone exterior accents, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, leather upholstery and a third row of seating, along with satellite radio and the sync communication system with bluetooth wireless connectivity. Limited trims are further outfitted with 18-inch chrome-clad wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded audio with 6cd changer, power-folding third-row seat and a reverse sensing system. Standard safety features on every explorer include advancetrac with roll stability control, traction control, anti-lock disc brakes and a tire pressure monitor, as well as dual front, front side-impact and side-curtain airbags. For 2010, the ford explorer carries over with minor adjustments to standard equipment and a restructured ordering strategy. A manual-folding third-row seat is now standard on eddie bauer trims, providing seating for up to seven passengers. America's favorite suv. introductionthe ford explorer is easily the best-selling sport-utility in america. Nearly 2. 8 million suvs were sold in 1998 and some 425,000 of them were ford explorers. About 430,000 explorers were sold in 1999. The explorer outsold its nearest competitor nearly two-to-one. what's the significance of all these numbers? Simply this: ford must be doing something right to sell so many explorers. The xls includes such niceties as power mirrors, locks and windows, an am/fm stereo cassette audio system, and aluminum wheels. With 4-wheel drive, the xls starts at $25,170. explorer drivers can move up to the $27,185 xlt, which adds fog lights, privacy glass and interior trim items; the 4x4 xlt lists for $29,150. further up the explorer hierarchy is the eddie bauer edition for $31,740 with two-wheel drive. This explorer adds 16-inch wheels, automatic temperature controls, electrochromatic rearview mirror, upgraded audio and trim items, including leather upholstery. The eddie bauer 4x4 starts at $33,705, or $34,120 with all-wheel drive. The limited is the top of the explorer line, with more leather plus simulated woodgrain, special wheels and exterior trim, and retails for $31,995 for 4x2, $33,960 for 4x4, $34,375 for awd. walkaroundjust about everything has changed on the explorer since its 1991 introduction. Still, if asked to describe a sport-utility vehicle, most people could save time by just showing a picture of the explorer. the xlt is the typical explorer, well equipped but not overly fancy or too expensive. It features a bright front and rear bumper with an integrated rub strip. Its compound headlamp array includes the headlights plus parking lights, turn signals and side marker lights in a single aero-curved assembly set into the bright grille surround. The grille itself is simple, with a large crossbar decorated with the ford blue oval badge and three smaller vertical bars. The rear bumper echoes the front in appearance, but comes standard with a 3500-pound trailer towing capacity. Tri-color taillights and a liftgate with a flip-open rear window finish off the rear. the explorer uses an independent short/long arm front suspension with torsion bars and a live axle mounted on two-stage variable-rate leaf springs at the rear. A 4. 0-liter pushrod v6 is standard in the xls and can be upgraded to the 4. 0-liter overhead-cam v6 for those wanting more performance. These engines come with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The xlt and more expensive models, however, come standard with a 5. 0-liter overhead-valve v8 with a 4-speed automatic. The 215-horsepower v8 cranks out 288 foot-pounds of torque. Ford made its trailer towing package standard on all v8-equipped explorers. interiorthe inside of the ford explorer looks like america's living room, which is appropriate, considering that so many americans spend so much time there. The front passengers get a pair of comfy captain's chairs, covered in a premium cloth for the xlt. Big doors make access easy, though the xlt doesn't have the running boards standard on the eddie bauer and limited models. The dash features full instrumentation in a neatly laid out nacelle. The radio and hvac (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are centered on the dash in a pod; that pod also houses a knob that controls the 4wd operation. The audio and cabin temperature controls are easy enough to use though we'd prefer an old-fashioned twist knob to control station tuning on the radio. The xlt has a handy center console/arm rest. front seat side-impact airbags are optional. Considering the poor rear vision suvs have when backing up, this rear sensing system is an important safety option. driving impressionthe explorer is easier to drive on a daily basis than the bigger suvs in the ford stable. It is far more nimble in crowded parking lots with narrow spaces or on forest roads with tight switchbacks. If a small turning circle is paramount, the 2-door is a better choice, at 34. 7 feet curb to curb, though the 4-door explorer manages a fairly nimble 37. 3 feet. the v6 is the most popular engine. But the 5. 0-liter v8 assures a certain command of the road with an ability to accelerate with all but the sportiest of automobiles, handy for merging or passing. It's the best choice for doing any towing, with reserve power for climbing hills and bucking headwinds. But the explorer is indeed a truck. It's responsive to its rack-and-pinion steering, reacting smartly to a turn of the wheel, but there's no denying the high-mounted center of gravity and overall mass of the vehicle. It handles like a truck. The explorer's relatively heavy tires and live rear axle arrangement also work against a luxury car ride. The explorer shares the cargo-hauling capability of the station wagons of yore, but it adds ground clearance and, in 4x4 versions, the promise of all-season mobility. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class. yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best. escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions. the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph. safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design. the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome. the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds. we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car. the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake. the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking. the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings. when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find.
